Presidents Message

We have now passed the halfway mark of the curling season and all sections are enjoying good participation.

Our Senior Men’s rink of Al Blair, Glenn Nelson, John Nicol and Ross Baker got through the Zone and Regional playoffs to the Ontario Championships held last week at the Dixie Curling Club. They had a 2 and 5 record with most of their games determined by a single rock.

We have representatives in the Junior Ladies Provincials of Sara Garland, Katrina Sale, Kristen Turko, and Linday Turko and Junior Men’s Provincials of Heath McCormick, Jeff Boyd, Raymond Busato and Michael Lilly.

Good Luck to all of you in the Finals!

Unionville Curling Club also did very well in the Gay-Lea which is the ladies equivalent to the men’s Investor’s Bonspiel.

Mary Garland and her team of Gail Beveridge, Gail Cross and Judy Lloyd won the championship against another Unionville rink of Bev Smith, Joanne Klein, Debbie Nicol and Linda Rowe. Mary and her team won this event last Year and next Year will be shooting for three in a row.

Some other Tankard and O.C.A. events have not declared champions yet so possibly we can add to the list in the next ‘Tradition’.

We thank everyone for pitching in to buy raffle tickets, participating in bonspiels and special events, supporting our bar facilities, buying Unionville Curling apparel, etc. All of the above have helped us to cover our chiller replacement cost this season.

The auction, which has been so successful, the last two years is being planned for April 4, 1997 and again we ask you to participate.

We are also planning a Giant Garage Sale at the Curling Club sometime in May so start saving your "treasures".

Enjoy the Last half of the season and Good Curling!

Ladies Section

The Ladies Section have been busy since our last Tradition report! It amazes me how much stamina our ladies have as the not only curl many games a week, but work so diligently on committees, making our curling a fun and exciting experience.

Congratulations once again to Sandra Davies, Pat Maybury and Laura Ferguson for another job well done. They have us all matching and looking great on the ice. Their "Hot Off The Ice" cookbooks are back by popular demand. You can purchase one for $10.00 or three for $25.00. You'll never eat better if you have one!

The OKJ Bonspiel, sponsored by Mike Kulmala of O.K. Johnson Insurance Brokers, was a great day hosted by Terri Savoury and Vera Wilkins. A Country fair theme was carried throughout wilt decorations, lunch and prizes. Linda Payzant, Pat Maybury, Terri Savoury and Judy Young were the Trophy winners. Second Prize went to Carole Murray, Kay Corlett, Anne Dann and Joyce Sherman.

We always look forward to the "Bill Hood" Bonspiel as Mollie Hood comes and spends the day with us and presents the trophy. Because Bill was not well we missed having Mollie with us this year but I'm told he is feeling fine now. Jane Nemni presented the trophy to Andrea Kerr, June Speers, Sue Davies and Judy Young.

The Christmas Bonspiel, a two day event, was sponsored by Marg Hicks. As usual her decorating flare was evident. Taking home the turkeys were Marj Sayeau, Collen Hamar, Kathy Landry, and Chris Wightman and Connie McDermott, June Speers, Laura Ferguson, and Judy Young.

On December 17th we wrapped up our first schedule with 2 play-off games, followed by our traditional Christmas Luncheon. The Supreme Lighting Trophy presented by Elly Stam was won by Joyce Miles, Sandra Leach and Sandra Taylor. Second was played by various spares. Runner-up for this trophy was Mary Anne McLeod, Mary Kulmala, Pat McDougall and Ann Lightfoot.

Helen Wright presented the Unionville Broadloom Trophy to Mary Gellard, June Speers, Laura Ferguson and Barb Langan. Gail Cross, Naomi Rutherford, Linda Band and Ann Ball were a close second. After the curling Elly Stam and her great helpers treated us to a fabulous buffet amidst a festive décor.
