VOLUME 13, NUMBER 1

NOVEMBER 1997

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well here we are curling again! To be honest I feel like I never left. The good news is we ARE curling. No major problems with the ice plant so far (knocki on wood). Jim has had the brine checked on a regular basis and everything is A-OK.

The Board thanks all the members for their support and wonderful fund raising events of last year. Thanks to you, I’m happy to report that our capital reservers are back to normal and we were even able to make a couple of purchases. In Kent’s office, there is a new photocopier and by the glass near the ice surface are 36 new chairs.

The emphasis will not be on fund raising this year; however, we will still host a Wine & Cheese Party with an Auction & Silent Auction. This event will be held on Saturday, March 28th, l998 and we hope to see all our members in attendance. Ron Beveridge has again agreed to co-ordinate this function.

I hope you have noticed our new Score Boards on the ice. These were constructed by our own Joe Murray, thanks to a donation made in memory of Jim Currie. We needed new Score Boards and very much appreciate the generosity of the Currie family.

Speaking of noticing things, are you aware that Unionville Curling Club has its own Web Site? Thanks to Jim Dibblee, we have entered the nineties (and they’re almost over). If you have a chance, have a look. I just called up Unionville Curling Club and there it was. Thanks Jim.

I would like to thank all the Operating Chairs for getting this curling season off to such a good start. I know how much time and effort is required to do this job and on behalf of the entire membership, WELL DONE.

I wish you Good Curling and since the next issue is in January, I’ll wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

CONNIE McDERMOTT,

PRESIDENT

CARD PARTY

Our 11th Annual Dessert and Card Party Night was held on September 9th. This fun night gave a profit of $1128.00. Thank you to all members who made those delicious desserts and donated some of the prizes. A special thank you to the Committee of Chris Wightman, Marj Sayeau, Connie Taylor, Yvette Stephenson, Ann Dann, Joyce Bayko, Shirley Edamura, Aileen Damp, Pat McDougall, Bonnie Cochrane, Connie McDermott, Stephanie, as well as Bruce Couperthwaite and crew who set up the tables and chairs.

Thank you everyone.

CHAIRPERSON

CLINIC

Thanks to good maintenance and a well behaving plant, the l997-98 season got started without a hitch! The novice clinics were well attended with about 55 people eager to get on the ice. The large number of curlers made it essential to run two separate novice clinics

over two evenings, and on the weekend. It was really great to see such keen newcomers to the game. You are what make this sport the success it is!

The skills analysis clinic as always was a hit with some old dogs trying to learn new tricks. About 30 advanced curlers tried their hand at learning the newly approved no-lift delivery and others tried to fix the little things that make this such a finesse sport. Thanks to our more experienced instructors, curlers benefited from a little strategy talk, or should I say debate? Thanks to Linda Corcoran drills were introduced to this clinic that allow people to efficiently practice on their own to improve their game.

From what I understand the Little Rockers are well on their way to a successful season. It’s amazing how quickly such small kids can pick up the game. I owe a huge thanks to Rob Hargrave, Don Small and the rest of his committee for over-seeing the Little Rockers’ first few outings.

Non of this could have been accomplished without the tremendous help from a great group of instructors. Thanks to all of you who lent a hand. I would also especially like to thank Al Gates for taking over the weekend clinics while I was out bonspieling, and Andrea Kerr for all of her support. As well, we need to thank Bonnie Cochrane and her committee for organizing the food for all four clinic days.

If ice space and time allow, I

hope to run a mid-season refresher clinic to correct any bad habits we may have picked up over the season so keep your eyes and ears open for a sign up as space will be limited.

Thanks again to everyone who made the clinics such a success.

EVENING LADIES SECTION

As per direction from O.C.L.A.

there is no longer a Business Women’s designation. We are all classified as "Ladies" - Day Ladies and Evening Ladies.

Our Section got off to another good start this curling season. Our annual "Wine and Cheese" social got things started on September 16. At that time we were concerned that we would not be reaching our goal of 96 members to have a full compliment of teams for our 3 nights of curling. We were fortunate to sign up 5 new members that evening. And with registration the following week and a few stragglers of our current membership, we not only had our 96 members, but an additional 2 members had signed up.

We are continuing with our Monday night schedule for team entry but still have only enough teams for 2 sheets.

The hilight of this season has definitely been the annual Creak & Groan Bonspiel,

designated as a "sunshine bonspiel" which was held on Saturday, November 8. The Chairperson of this event was Carolyn Whitaker. Carolyn and her committee (Myra Scott, Darlene Schaeffer, Louise Ferri and Colleen Q uinn) did an excellent job of creating a "Big Top" theme complete with streamers and balloons. It was a trying experience but they finally ended up with the required 16 teams representing the following Clubs: U (4 teams), Scarborough, Barrie, St. George’s, High Park, Thornhill, Leaside, Port Perry, Royals, Boulevard and Haliburton. The event was won by the UCC day ladies team skipped by Andrea Kerr, ConnieMcDermott,Vice, Bonnie Cochrane, second and Lynne Wasylyk, lead. The second place team was from Scarborough Golf & Curling Club skipped by Barb Gillespie. Pat provided a delicious dinner of pork tenderloin and the evening was rounded out with a friend of Myra’s, Brian Ellioitt as C.

According to our Ice Committee Chairperson, Christine Pierce, 2 new members have joined our section. I believe that we will be losing 2 members at the conclusion of this first schedule which means that 2 regular members will have to be drawn out to make room for these 2 new ladies to curl in the second schedule.

It is such a pleasure to know that all of our teams for the 3

5

The Unionville News

nights have 4 curlers and that we do not have to depend on girls to curl on 2 teams as we did last year. All and all we’re off to a good start. We have been enjoying our snacks after curling and have plans for "pizza night" and "wing night".

Virginia Brooker will be showing us fashions again this year.

Looking forward to another great season!!

MIXED SECTION

Our first round draw is underway - many thanks to Kent Tomasik and our mentors Fran and Glenn Allan. We have some very keen, new curlers joining us this year to round out our forty-six teams.

The first bonspiel (Pot Luck Spiel) was well attended and from all reports, very successful. A big Thank You to bonspiel convenors Diane and John French. "Winners" of this event was the team of Charlie Fisher, Laura Ferguson, Michelle McFadden and Phil Policelli. Second place team was Fran Allan, Joan Allen, Brian Monti and Bruce McFadden while third place went to the team of Kent Tomasik, John French, Bill Pentecost and Nancy Pennell.

The next bonspiel if the Nuts and Bolts Spiel which will be run the last week of November. Entry sheets are filled as this newsletter

information is being typed and with the event being co-ordinated by Glenn and Fran Allan it looks like another successful mixed event!

Your mixed committee is interested in hearing from you re any ideas, thoughts, concerns, etc. The following people are on the committee - one or more of whom will be on the same draw as you to make communication easier

EDITORS’ NOTE

I would like it duly noted that I

GAYLE COLEMAN,was involved with a pig roast this fall within my townhouse complex and nothing was burnt down or remotely burnt (not even the pig). It was done to perfection. However, I must admit I did not tell my neighbours about the UCC Burnt Pig Roast until after the fact!!

WAY TO GO GAYLE -- LUCKY NEIGHBOURS!!

What a bonus to be able to catch some fantastic curling from the Olympic Trials in Brandon on TSN at this time of year. It’s great to see Kim and Corie there.

ETIQUETTE TIP

If you win your game you offer a drink to the losers, and after that the losers should reciprocate by offering the next drink.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.
