VOLUME 13, NUMBER 3

April 1998

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The end of the curling season is not far off. It seems like just yesterday that I was writing that the season was about to begin. The time has flown by so quickly that I’m either having fun or getting old.

This will be the last time that I remind you about the AUCTION (I promise). Remember Saturday March 28 at 7:30 PM. We’ll have complimentary wine, draft beer and snacks, not to mention the silent auction and the live auction with Brian Monti, Jim McKendry and Ted McDermott as our auctioneers.

Saturday, April 18 is Championship Day/Night. Final playoffs in Junior, Mixed, Afternoon Men, Business Ladies (Ladies of the Evening), Day Ladies and Men will take place throughout the day and into the early evening. Following the curling will be special presentations and wings, and a great party. Be sure to join us on the 18th.

Monday, June 8th will be our Annual General Meeting. Please note this date on your calendar for 7:30 PM and

Make a point of coming out to this very important meeting.

I would like to thank the Operating Committee Heads for the outstanding jobs they have done all year long. It is very difficult to do your job and keep everyone happy, but you have managed it. Well Done!! Also to all the committees working within the Club - you are the people who make UCC the wonderful place that it is.

Of course my biggest thanks go to the Board Members, who have worked diligently all year making my job a pleasure. Especially to Glenn Allan who has been my advisor and support, and to Bill Creber who has been my right arm. Bill will be an outstanding President next year; we’re lucky to get him.

And last but not least my thanks to Jim and Kent. Jim has provided keen consistent ice all season and Kent, in spite of his gruffness, has been a great help (he really is a pussycat).

We are all saddened by the loss of Al Blair; our sympathies go to his family.

CONNIE MCDERMOTT

Once again we wish to extend our thanks to Don Garland for his more than generous support of this event.

And a very special bow to Al Gates who worked tirelessly not only to organize and run this event, but also to convince his employer, Molsons, to provide some excellent gifts and prizes. Also, much thanks to John Wellwood for his assistance.

BUSINESS (EVENING) LADIES SECTION

The third schedule of the Business Women’s Section started on February 3 with a full complement of curlers for all 3 nights (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday). This schedule brings us down to April 2 with our playoffs set for April 7,8, and 9. Again this year we have used the point system - 10 points for a win, 5 points for a tie, 1 point for a loss and 0 for a default. For the playoffs the 2 skips, vices, seconds and leads with the highest points will curl in the playoffs. The winning team goes into the Club Championships.

Our annual Guest Day was held on Saturday, February 21. According to our bonspiel chairperson, Carolyn Whitaker, there were 57 women in attendance. Out of these 57, there were 23 ladies who showed an interest in curling and the UCC. Hopefully we will be able to recruit some of these same people for the ‘98-’99 season. The format was one 4 end game and one 3 end game. Pat served a delicious lunch of chicken and salad. Many thanks to Carolyn and her very able committee of Louise Ferri, Colleen Quinn, Myra Scott and Darlene

Schaeffer.

Because there was to be no curling the first week of March, it was decided to have a fun game on Wednesday and Thursday evenings with a mixture of Day Ladies and our own Business Ladies. The response has been tremendous. As a matter of fact all the teams for Wednesday evening consisted of 5 players, while the Thursday draw had 4 person teams. Refreshments were served after the games. This format has been discussed for some time now and I’m sure it will be successful. Lois Dickson of Day Ladies has been instrumental in making this event a reality. She has had a lot of help from Christine Pierce, Ice Chairperson for the Business Ladies. This is certain to be the beginning of many years of this kind of camaraderie between our two Sections. It will be great to get to know each other. See Day

BANTAM/JUNIOR SECTION

Our Bantam/Junior curlers have continued their outstanding competitive play into the second half of this season. In OCA play, our Bantam boys team of Ryan Hardman (skip), Michael Andersen, Steve Andersen and Kyle Woodie won the A side of the Bantam Boys zone. This was remarkable, as three members of the team are still eligible for Little Rock play. Ryan Hardman, Michael Andersen, James Hardman and Kim Brown won the C Consolation event in the Toronto Curling Association Bantam League Championship. Success has

continued into the OLGA play with the team of Carrie Lindner(Skip), Lindsay Osborne, Heather Nicol and Tammy Sale being dominant A side winners of the Bantam Girls Zone. This Bantam team was the consolation event winner in Toronto District Junior League Championship. Both the boys and girls Bantam teams will be in regional competition the weekend of March 21.

Our members have also contributed to the success of their school teams. Carrie Lindner won the inaugural Girls Gore High School Ontario Championship with a Bradford High School team. Carrie was the All-Star Skip in this event. Carrie played Vice on a mixed team that finished second in this year’s Ontario Junior Mixed. James Hardman, Kim Brown, Kyle Brown and Mathew Hardman had the fourth highest point total of 80 teams competing in the recent Ontario Elementary School Championship. The Markham District High School team comprised of UCC members Lindsay Osborne, (skip), Heather Nicol and Jennifer Wilson won the York Region for Gore and have also qualified for the OFSAA Provincial Championship at the end of the month. Lindsay Osborne, Brent Allen, Jennifer Wilson and Dan Woodley combined to win the York Regional High School Mixed Championship.
