PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hi Folks! Welcome back to all our returning members and a special welcome to our new members. I hope you all have a great season of fun and good curling. For your information, our membership has grown and at present we are as follows - 157 Men (+ 7), 52 Afternoon Men (+6), 117 Day Ladies (+7), 97 Business Women (even), 40 Juniors (+15), 19 Little Rockers (-12), 94 Mixed only (+10). Considering that we lose a few members every year for a variety of reasons this speaks well for the game and our Club. Many thanks to Lois Dickson (Membership Chair) for all her many efforts including our "Open House" nights in September for achieving these results. I would like to thank our operating chairs and their committees for being so well organized and getting each section off to such a good start. These people work very hard on our behalf and from the entire membership we say - THANKS! Kudos to John Nicol and his staff of instructors for putting |
on the clinics this year - a super job! And a special thanks to Kent and Jim. They work diligently all year for us but at "start-up" time the pressures on them are considerable - thanks guys, we really do appreciate your efforts. In the "in case you haven’t noticed or didn’t know department", how about the following: new chairs, tables and a 55" screen TV for the lounge: a temperature gauge to regulate the ice temperature that should help give us a more consistent surface, - a new competitive mixed league that play once a month on Sunday nights; - and last but not least, we have been awarded the Junior Mens and Womens Ontario Championship final at our Club in the year 2002. Please, Just a reminder - soliciting or selling in any form is not permitted on the Club premises without approval of the Board of Directors. All the best in the 98/99 season and - GOOD CURLING! BILL CREBER

REMINDER FROM THE ICE COMMITTEE Please do not go on the ice until Jim has taken the score down. This is for your own safety as well as our ice maker. Please enter the ice area from the SOUTH DOOR. The north door is locked for a reason. This area is near the north exit door and the parking lot. We are trying to keep the ice clean!! You can exit from the ice area by either door. In the interest of safety please DO NOT set up opposition rocks. O.C.A. News Sign up sheets for the entire l998-99 Men’s Competitive season are now up on the bulletin board in the men’s locker room. For Mixed and Juniors they are on the respective bulletin boards at the foot of the stairs at entrances to the men’s and ladies’ locker rooms. Please check the boards carefully as there are a number of early events and remember, entries close 2 weeks before all zone playdowns |

CLINICS Traditionally, the Unionville curling season starts with clinics. Over 45 of our active members have taken Curl Canada courses leading to certification as instructors and coaches. Similar to skiing, a long-standing national program operates to certify instructors and to provide a sound technical basis for consistent and effective instruction. Our clinics follow the established Curl Canada programs. We offer two levels of clinics. The introductory clinic is designed for curlers who have curled for less than three years. Students are assumed to have never curled, with no prior exposure to the game. Equipment requirements, rules, scoring and etiquette are discussed. The delivery is broken down, allowing focus on the individual elements of stance, alignment, balance, weight transfer, slide, line of delivery, release and sweeping. This comprehensive six hour clinic should be repeated at the beginning of each year, for at least three years. Two introductory clinics were held with seventy-six curlers attending. Instructors were Fran Allen, Dave Bust, Gail |
Coleman, Andrea Err, Deb. Nicole, Heather Nicole, John Nicole, Ann DNA, Loran Franklin, Mike Purple, Janet Stoker, Art Leganchuk and Laura Ferguson. The Skills Analysis Clinic is appropriate for all experienced curlers. Again the curling delivery is broken down into principle elements. Besides reviewing faults, Instructors taught self-assessment drills for each element for the curler to use throughout the season. Each curler should gain an understanding of personal areas of potential improvement including the priority of what to work on first. Strategy and sweeping were also covered. Thirty-two members attended the skills analysis clinic. All Gates, Marilyn Parsons, Andrea Kerr, Deb Nicol and John Nicol. DEB AND JOHN NICOL
MEN’S SECTION Re Men’s Opening Bonspiel "President’s Choice Open" Throughout the week of October 26-30, the first " PC OPEN" was held. Rob Hargrave sponsored this event on behalf of President’s Choice and their products. With very little time to prepare such an early event the Committee was pleasantly surprised to have a full 24 team contingent of 96 men curlers. The format was a two (2) game guarantee points format in which the top 16 teams qualified into four |
divisions. A good time was had by all throughout the week. Here are the finalists: A WINNER Carl Glatt
I would like to thank all participants that really made this event and the winners, of course. I would also like to thank Evelyn and Ted behind the bar for going "beyond the call of duty" on some nights but I would like to especially Rob Hargrave for his sponsorship and all committee members (Lorne Franklin), Larry Hope, Jim Bell, John Bell and especially Duncan MacDougall). MIKE PURCELL

All of these teams enjoyed dinner and prizes at the Polish Canadian Cultural Centre in Mississauga and look forward to another year at the Gay Lea Toronto & District Ladies Bonspiel. SECOND SCHEDULE Don’t forget to sign up for the second schedule which starts in January. You are not automatically included in this draw. The sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board and the draw will be made the first week in December. A sincere thank you to all of our sponsors whose generosity makes it possible for us to continue with our curling events throughout the season. On behalf of the Ladies’ Executive, I wish you and yours best wishes for the Christmas season and a Happy New ear. BONNIE COCHRANE
BUSINESS WOMEN’S SECTION The Executive of the Business Women’s section has worked hard to get this new curling season underway. We are pleased to welcome 21 new |
members to our section, both in the ranks of new and experienced curlers. It is our hope that they are pleased with their decision to join our Club and that they are deriving much pleasure from their connection with U.C.C. We continue to be a very social group and enjoy the opportunity to sit and relax with friends after our games. It can be quite hectic for many to make it to the Club by 5:30 PM and so we all look forward to the opportunity to enjoy a drink and horsd’oerves at the end of our games. A major event for the Business Women is the annual Creak and Groan Bonspiel. The theme for this year’s event held on November 7 was "The 50’s - the Coke Generation". Our generous sponsor was PLM Graphics which also donated many Coke-related items. Sixteen teams were greeted to 50’s music and decorations upon arrival. All teams played two 8-end games with a break for a challenging 50’s trivia quiz and lunch. After smiling pretty for the Shaw Cable cameraman and the Economist and Sun photographer the curlers were treated to a roast beef dinner. Another hilight of the day was the modeling of beautiful "one of a kind" vests designed by Linda Corcoran and Ev Stogryn. Linda kindly donated a vest which was chosen as the first prize in our raffle. An exciting finish saw the top three teams separated by 3/4 of a point! First place went to |
the Leaside rink skipped by Jennifer Wilde. A mere 1/4 point behind was the second place team from Unionville skipped by Christine Pierce playing with Sara Garland, Jen Issler and Carolyn Nicholson. The Weston club skipped by Jodi McCutcheon came within a hair of being the overall winners but settled for third place. Jodi’s team members included Sandy Graham, Catherine Kemp and Monta Kerr. These very young women definitely are a force to be reckoned with. The Unionville team skipped by Lynn Brown, with Deb nicol, Nancy Smith and Deb Hargrave took fourth place. The high point game prize went to Marilyn Lowe’s Unionville team including Sara Koke, Jill Morrison and Marilyn Jannett. Thanks to the excellent work of Louise Ferri and her very able committee this was a very successful event. Two weeks remain in our current schedule and we look forward to our Christmas dinner on December 7 at which time prizes will be awarded for the first draw. MARILYN LOWE

BANTAM/JUNIOR CURLING; Our bantam/junior membership has doubled over last year we now have 42 Bantam/Junior members. It is a pleasure to see this. The growth is equally split between graduates from the Little Rock program and new members to the Club. Curl Ontario has developed a very sophisticated badge award program that requires each curler to demonstrate specific skills in order to earn badges The badges range from an introductory level (red, blue) up to very high skill levels appropriate for athletes competing at provincial or national levels (bronze, silver, gold). Instruction and testing related to earning a badge have been incorporated into this year’s program. Although the season has just begun, the Bantam Girls team of Meaghan Stoll (skip), Kelly Cochrane, Heather Nicol and Tammy Sale had a very successful start winning the inaugural SOCA Bonspiel in |
London. Opposition included teams from last year’s Bantam Provincials. They outscored their opponents 44 to 9 BANTAM/JUNIOR SECTION That’s all folks until the end of January. Enjoy your curling and have a safe and happy holiday season. New Year’s Eve at the Club is a very nice evening - try to join us. Look for the sign up sheet MARILYN PARSONS
