PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi Folks, welcome to 1999.

What a winter so far eh! We’ve already recorded the snowiest month of the century and they say there’s lots more to come. This weather makes it more like a curling season than

anything we’ve had for quite some time.

We’re halfway through the season and all appears to be going well. All sections are busy and participation in all Club events has been terrific. Lots of out-of-club activity too.

We had a super New Year’s Eve party and many thanks to the volunteers who made it possible. Plans are already underway for the big bash of "2000". Speaking of volunteers, they are always needed. If you’d like to help out in any way please let me or one of the Operating Committee Chairpersons know. It’s a little work but a lot of fun.

How about these swinging rocks! We had Shorty Jenkins work on them December 21 and initially they curled far too much, but this was to be expected. They’ve settled down now to a nice 3 to 4 foot curl, as he said they would. It sure makes the curling a lot more fun doesn’t it?

AN EARLY REMINDER – Connie McDermott will be heading up the committee for our 5th Annual Auction in the spring. Watch for further details on the bulletin boards. It has become one of our year’s highlights and a great party! We encourage all of you to participate.

All the best for the last half of the season and – GOOD CURLING!

provided valuable support. We thank the willingness of some of the Day Ladies members to spare for our section. A strong and committed executive has worked hard to support all of the activities the Business Women enjoy.

Watch for the sign-up sheets.

Just a reminder for all mixed curlers – PLEASE – make sure you note when your games are and if you have a scheduling conflict get a spare and let your skip know you won’t be at the game. Skips – if you find yourself in a one sided game and want to quit, consider the players for whom this may be their ONLY game and keep playing to at least six ends so all players get some curling in – THANKS! Good curling to the end of the season everyone!

MIXED COMMITTEE

BANTAM-JUNIOR SECTION

The Bantam-Junior In-House Round Robin finished their draw of 7 games and the winner with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses was Dan Woodley’s team. Congratulations to Dan Woodley, (skip), Steven Anderson (vice), Kyle Woodley.(second) & Caitlin Rolfe (lead)

PROUD PROVINCIALISTS

Coach Linda Corcoran thanks her Bantam girls team for the "absolutely excellent effort" at the Junior Women’s Provincial Championship in Minden.

Meaghan Stolll’s team finished 6th out of eight teams but, of the five games they lost¸ four were decided on the last rock in either the 10th or 11th end.

As one example of their high quality of play, they were tied with the Jennifer Hanna team from Ottawa going into the 10th end. This team went undefeated in round-robin play.

Another example of this team’s character was displayed during the game against the only other all-bantam team at this Junior Championship. Unionville

found themselves down 6-0 after 4 ends. This team bore down and by stealing 1 point 6 ends in a row went on to win the game 6-7 in 11 ends!

What more could you expect from our bantam team that went undefeated in Junior Zones in Oshawa and Junior Regionals (A side winners) in Lindsay!!

Congratulations Meaghan Stoll (skip), Kelly Cochrane (vice), Heather Nicol (second) and Tammy Sale (lead)!

AWSOME EIGHT-ENDER

On Monday January 11, Lindsay Osborne’s Markham District High School team scored their first eight-ender! They achieved this momentous steal against Richmond Hill High School at the Richmond Hill Curling Club.

It happened in the second end and the team, all Unionville Curling Club members, went on to win the game 24-1 in 6 ends.

Congratulations to Lindsay Osborne (skip), Heather Nicol (vice), Jennifer Wilson (second) and Tammy Sale (lead).

BANTAM REGIONAL WINNERS:

Michael Anderson (skip), Andrew Mannik, James Hardman and Mike Horner.
