PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hi Folks, Our curling season is about to wrap up for another year. It seems to go by all too quickly, doesn’t it? However, there are still some important dates to remember. Our annual auction is planned for April 10. It’s one of the year’s highlights so please plan to attend. Check bulletin boards for all the details. Championship Day is Saturday, April 17. Playoffs for all sections will take place throughout the day and early evening followed by the presentations to our winners and a great wind-up party. At this time I’d like to thank all the Operating Committee Chairs for their terrific efforts throughout the year. It’s with their guidance and the help they receive from their committees that make our Club so successful. Every "in-club" bonspiel and our "open" spiels as well were filled to oversubscribed this year. To all of you, on behalf of all the members, we say THANK YOU – WELL DONE! It has been an honour and a privilege to be your President this year. I’ve enjoyed my term immensely. The help and |
support of our Board has made my job an easy and very pleasurable one. They are a wonderful group of people consisting of Connie McDermott, Al Gates, Mary Ann Artkin, Sandra Davies, Lois Dickson, Don Garland, Linda McKendry, Joe Nemni and Dennis Osborne. My sincerest thanks to you all. And last but not least, my thanks to Kent and Jim - absolutely the greatest guys to work with all season. They have pride in their work and in our Club. We’re lucky to have them. Many, many Thanks! Look forward to seeing you at our Annual General Meeting in June. BILL CREBER PRESIDENT MEN’S SECTION

BUSINESS WOMEN’S SECTION We are soon coming to the end of another curling season and the Business Women’s section continues to be a vibrant one. There is a healthy camaraderie |
both on and off the ice, which has strengthened as our members have come to better know one another. The executive, through its commitment and dedication, has offered our curlers a variety of activities to enjoy throughout the season. Prize nights were held February 2, 3, and 4 for the second draw. Patti Tomchick and Marilyn Jannett arranged for finger sandwiches and sweets to be served as we recognized our winners. The combination was well received. The winners were as follows: TUESDAY: 1st: - Jill King, Charlotte Kelly, Heather Reid and Krystyna Rochewicz 2nd: - Joanne Klein, Judy Robertson, Heather Bracey & Linda Levesque WEDNESDAY 1st: - Sara Garland, Jane Morgan, Annie Brind & Mardy Emmerson. 2nd: - Cathy Gostlin, Debbie Hargrave, Ann Millard & Linda Kalinack. THURSDAY 1st : - Mary Ann Turko, Gail Browne, Betty Cowan & Ann Clark. 2nd: - Carroll Chilton, Pauline Wozniak, Joyce MacDonald & Jill Doble. On Saturday, February 20 the annual Guest Day was held with 34 people participating. "Lounge" instruction was expertly handled by Marilyn Lowe followed by on-ice instruction by our capable members. After two games, brain teasers, a raffle from a table laden with prizes, everyone enjoyed a well- |

deserved lunch. Susan Pethick’s team not only shone on the ice but also won the brain teaser contest! The winning team comprised of Susan Pethick and guest Beth Ferguson, Sally Sandiford and guest Sandy Schell-Kennedy. The new curlers certainly left with a much greater appreciation of the game, not to mention a few aches and bruises. A fun time was had by all! (Louise Ferri) On Wednesday March 3 and Thursday March 4 the Day Ladies and Business Women’s section got together for their second annual spiel. This format has been extremely successful and interest continues to grow. The committee is commended for its organization of a very successful event that offered wonderful food and lovely array of prizes. As the third draw comes to a close we look forward to our Annual General Meeting which will be held on Monday April 12. Prior to the meeting our members enjoy dinner together and recognize the winners of the third draw. At the meeting the executive members will present their final reports and the slate of officers for the 1999-2000 executive will be ap-proved. We will then look forward to Championship Night at which time the two teams who survive the playoff round will meet to determine the season winners. It has been a pleasure to serve as Chair of the Business Women’s Section this year. I have been fortunate to work with an executive that has been |
committed to offering the best possible season to its members. MARILYN LOWE BUSINESS WOMEN’S CHAIRPERSON
MIXED CURLING
This was another successful year for our Mixed Section. Participants were very supportive of all draw and bonspiel formats (Thursday draw at 9:30 PM remains the exception!). As with last year, new curlers were informally polled and reported they had enjoyed the format, and the chance to curl in bonspiels. The numbers of brand new curlers to the Club participating in bonspiels remains low – the new curlers consulted state this is due to their hesitancy – not the lack of a congenial atmosphere. Certainly, there were a number of second year curlers participating in all bonspiel events. The mixed curling format remains a "gate" for many new members to feel secure in learning the game as well as the "social" side of the sport! – these members then join our other sections as well. The bonspiels were well attended and all were run at a profit for the Club. The success of the bonspiels is due to a hard working committee and the support of sponsors Al Gates, Don Garland, Charlotte and Ron Cooley, Donna Fitzpatrick, Sylvio Roy and Robb Thompson). There seems to be interest in sponsorship from new members – a suggestion for next year’s committee will be to secure more sponsorships for the bonspiels. |
The same format is planned for next year (three draws: five bonspiels). The Mixed Committee will have a significant numbers of new faces - how–ver many have had experience on committees within the Club. The Chair position(s) will likely be shared within the committee. A special thank you needs to go to Kent Tomasik once again for this past season – his quiet organization of many loose ends enabled the completion of draws, draw prize awards, playoffs, etc! Thank you to the l998/l999 Mixed Committee: Wayne & Lynn Morrison Brian Monti & Louise Ferri Judy Robertson Graham & Peggy Adams Bryce & Janice Warwick Ray &Fran Mount Kent Tomasik MIKE & PAULA DONAHOE CHAIRS, MIXED SECTION BANTAM/JUNIOR SECTION Winners of the second schedule were: Michael Anderson, skip, Hollie Nicol, Sarah Noorden & Leslie Sunderani ZONES The Bantam Mixed Team of Michael Anderson, skip, Tammy Sale, Kyle Brown and Kim Brown represented our Club at Zone play in Port Perry. Stoll, skip, Kelly Cochrane, Heather Nicol and Tammy Sale who tied for second at the recent Bantam Provincials. The girls got off to a slow start by closely losing their first 2 games, then winning their last 5 games. They were the only team to beat the eventual Provincial winners - Julie Reddick from Oakville. They also beat her at Regionals! (Julie Reddick was also Junior Provincial Champion. Unfortunately, it was a straight round robin with no playoffs. Qualifying for Provincial play in OFFSA in April at Avonlea Curling Club is the Markham District High School team (all Unionville Curling Club members) Lindsay Osborne, skip, Heather Nicol, Jennifer Wilson, Tammy Sale and Jackie Reynolds. GOOD LUCK GIRLS! JOHN NICOL BANTAM/JUNIOR CHAIR EDITOR’S DESK What a great Briar!! GUY! GUY! GUY! And then cool hand Stoughton takes his 2nd Briar. Still more curling coverage on TV to come with the WORLDS and SKINS. Enjoy!! Two quotes stayed with me – Curlers wear 2 different shoes and throw rocks at buttons in houses!". "One broom men don’t mind using!". So if we have the guys buy a new one each year they can use it at home off season! |
See you at the Auction Saturday, April 10 – a real fun night and at Championship Day on Saturday April 17. Have a safe and happy summer and see you all back at U.C.C where friendship is our TRADITION.
