Also, the sign-up sheet for our New Year's Eve Gala are posted and filling up quickly, so if you don't want to miss the most exciting evening of the century, sign up today. Speaking of the holiday season, don't forget to get copies of our cook book, "Hot off the Ice - Second Event", for your holiday entertaining and as gifts. In closing I'd like to remind you that as of January 1, 2000, our Curling Club becomes a smoke free environment. This proposal was passed at our General Meeting in l998 and again reinforced at this year's meeting. Thank you in |
advance for your adherence to this new club rule. Good luck and good curling! ALLEN GATES,
CLINICS 1999 Twenty-five members were involved this year in the teaching clinics.
Three adult clinics were held at the beginning of October. Art Leganchuk assisted by Blanche Leslie, Anne Dann assisted by Pat Seawright, chaired the two Novice Clinics and John Nicol assisted by Al Gates chaired the Intermediate and Skills Analysis Clinic. These clinics were very successful. The organizational skills and technical expertise of these people were more than |

apparent. Mary Kulmala supplied meals for all three - a huge effort Mary! Laura Ferguson assisted by Ev Reid rounded up all the instructors and Lynn Brown assisted by Mary Ann Artkin called all 106 students. For three consecutive Sundays in October, clinics were held for the Little Rock section. Gayle Coleman assisted by Deb Nicol ran these Clinics for 30 children between 7 and 12. Judy Robertson was a great help supplying hot chocolate, juice and cookies each day. On October 25th, our first Business Women's Clinic was held. Delivery skills were checked followed by a basic strategy session including the Free Guard Zone rule. I enjoyed this evening tremendously and hope it was a help to all who attended. On behalf of the Board and myself, I wish to thank all of you who were so dependable and generous with your time to help our new curlers. This only helps to benefit all of us by making our games more interesting. Unionville is blessed to have so many who are so willingly give of their time. LOIS DICKSON
|
The two-evening mid-week Novice Clinic was presented on September 29-30
this year, under the general direction of Unionville Clinic co-ordinator
Lois Dickson, and the chairmanship of Blanche Leslie and Art Leganchuk.
Eight of Unionville's very capable instructors participated in the on-ice
instruction:
Art Leganchuk did most of the off-ice presentation. Armed with a laptop computer and using our new theatre television to display, he presented over 175 slides in approximately 100 minutes of off-ice sessions. These covered the complete range of novice curling topics from "what to wear" to "where to stand when its not your turn".
The graphics were particularly effective in describing such items as the "curling" path of a rock, scoring, use of the scoreboard, ice markings, rules, etc. Animated stick figures helped to describe the stance, hip elevation, and the other elements of rock delivery. The slide set provided a complete script. |
No matter how effective the off-ice presentation may be, it is still the on-ice work by our capable instructors that turns theory into students' on-ice performance. Many thanks to all our instructors for their time and efforts in each of the several clinics that were presented this fall. The presentation seemed to be well received by students and instructors alike. If there is any interest by other instructors in using similar presentations, contact me.
ART LEGANCHUK MEN'S SECTION Its that time of year in which we forget about yelling "fore"! and shout those famous words "Sweep! Hurry! Hurry! " Firstly, I would like to thank Duncan McDougall for all the work he has
done throughout the years to co-ordinate the men's curling section. It is
not retirement, as we all know, but he will have to find another hobby for
all his extra time.

order to make the "playoff" format easier, with full participation.
Our "Opening Bonspiel" took place November 8-12 with Lorne Franklin
running the show. We had 24 teams, and excellent sponsors. We would like
to thank Doug Fleming (Canadian Tire), Rob Murphy (Concord Elevator), Dave
Bayliss (Pet Value), and Craig Harvey (Visualinx Communications). With
their sponsorship, this spiel was successful.

Castlemore Country Club and we all look forward to another year at the Gay Lea sponsored Toronto & District Ladies Bonspiel. SECOND SCHEDULE Don't forget to sign up for the second schedule which starts in January. You are not automatically included in this draw. The sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board and the draw will be made the first week in December. A sincere thank you to all of our sponsors whose generosity makes it possible for us to continue with our curling events throughout the season. On behalf of the Ladies' Executive, I wish you and yours best wishes for the Christmas Season and a Happy Millenium. PAT MAYBURY
BUSINESS WOMEN All the business ladies are busy with sweeping and cleaning. Cleaning of their rocks, of course. Our roster is full and we have a waiting list at this time. The second draw is over-subscribed and we will have to draw out a few curlers. Our annual Wine and Cheese social was, as usual, a fun event. We welcomed our new curlers, told a few stories and |
conducted our semi-annual business meeting as well. We held a very successful Clinic in October with a review of no lift delivery and two gripper sweeping. Lois Dickson also covered strategy and etiquette. Thank you Lois for all your expert help. We are planning to have regular clinics this year and will offer one in the New Year. We have, in our section, two new graduates of the Ontario Curling Association coaches Level L certification, and will be utilizing their new skills in the New Year. Unfortunately we were unable to host our annual Creak and Groan Bonspiel
due to the limited out-of-club response. We are reviewing the timing of
this event for the future.

MIXED REPORT The Mixed section is well underway. Normally, I would say under the leadership of -------. However, we have no chiefs, only indians this year |
Our Committee is comprised of:
As mentioned, first schedule is well underway, thanks to the efforts of Mike Donahoe and Neil King for organizing the draw and to Judy Robertson for organizing the snacks. Second schedule will soon be upon us so make sure you sign up or you will miss the fun. At the time of writing, we've had only one bonspiel - "The Pot Luck". It was well attended and everyone had a great time, thanks to Graham and Peggy Adams. The big winners were Steve McLeod, Nancy Smith, Shelly Gram and Nympha Lee. Their prize was a trip to the buffet table first.! Our next bonspiel is the "Nuts and Bolts" organized by Ray and Fran Mount and Bill and Barb Pentecost. Our sponsors of this event are Donna Fitzpatrick of Fitzpatrick Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine Clinic and Sylvio Roy of Nobledee Pet Care. Many |

thanks to you all. I'll report on the happenings in the next issue of the Tradition. Look for the sign up sheets for the "Trivial Pursuit" bonspiel on January 22 and our Team Entry bonspiel on February 11 and 12. Kent Tomasik has worked very hard on the Mixed Committee over the past few years; however, this year we're on our own, so if you want information regarding Mixed or if you want to help out, please call a committee member, NOT Kent! CONNIE MCDERMOTT
BANTAM/JUNIOR SECTION The Bantam/Juniors (ages 12-19) opened the season in the traditional time-slot at noon on Sundays. Enrollment is encouraging, with 40 curlers, the maximum possible for us to handle easily, and there are already enquiries from others hoping for a future spot in the programme. There is a high percentage of new Bantams, some graduating from Little Rockers and some taking up the sport for the first time --- television is often cited as one key influence on their decisions to take up curling, along with friends already active in the sport. Many thanks to the club members who mounted the pre-season clinics which are mandatory for |
all Bantam/Juniors in the first two years of curling. Besides the regular curling each Sunday, most participants are working on one level or another in the excellent Curl Ontario skills programme, a stepped sequence of badges systematically building up their abilities and hence, their enjoyment in curling. A tradition revived --- an all-day in-house bonspiel will be held on Saturday, December 4. We also have two Bantam age competitive teams playing in an inter-club
league as well as representing UCC in regional playdowns and bonspiels.
Hollie Nicol skips a girls' squad, along with Kim Brown, Sarah Noorden and
Jackie Masongsong, coached by John Nicol. On the male side, skip Stephen
Jones is joined by Andy Penwell, James Hellyer and Kevin Hamm, coached by
Diane Jones. Recently the two squads placed 5th and 6th in a
highly-competitive bonspiel in Whitby, a good start for what hopefully will
prove a very successful season.
PETER MITCHELL
LITTLE ROCK SECTION We have had a great start to this years curling season with |
20 brand new curlers. This brings our total to 34 children. Our first three Sundays were spent having curling clinics. A special Thank You goes out to Lois Dickson, Gail Coleman and the many instructors who gave their time to help. We are looking forward to a fun season with our first bonspiel being held on Sunday, December 5. PAUL COUPERTHWAITE
FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Fourteen members participated in Level 1 and 2 courses this fall and became very enthusiastic and knowledgable. Not only stance was perfected, just ask about slow and fast carbs for curling day nutritiion! "You must be fit for curling as curling won't make you fit". It takes 12 weeks of training to get ready for curling, once weekly training to maintain and 12 weeks of nothing to lose! What did you do last summer?
What will Al Gates do next summer? Ask him!! MARILYN PARSONS
