PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The season is truly in high gear now and the curling months have just "slid" by. It’s hard to believe that we are already more than half way through the 1999-2000 season! Unionville has again shown that "Friendship is a Tradition" while hosting various events such as the OCA Men’s zone playdowns for Masters, the Ladies Open Spiel, the Brick Men’s Bonspiel, plus the Scott Tournament of Hearts Regional Playdowns. I’d like to take this opportunity to mention what an exceptional job Kathy Cassin and her committee did in hosting the Ladies Regional. Congratulations Kathy et al! Unionville has also shown our tenacity for competition in all of our divisions from Bantams to Masters. I’d like to congratulate all six of the ex-Junior Ladies from Unionville who competed on various teams in the Scott Regional Playdowns. A special congratulation goes out to Kim Gellard and her team, who represented our Club in the |
Southern Ontario Ladies Championships. Finally, a huge round of applause to Andrea Kerr and her rink, who competed in the final game to represent Ontario in the Canadian Senior Women Championship. Our in-club bonspiels and events are also in full swing and I am happy to report all are well attended. Thanks to all the organizing committees for their tireless efforts. A special thank you goes out to Neil and Nancy Smith and their committee for organizing another fantastic New Year’s Eve bash. All I have to say is I was very happy that an early morning Y2K distress call did not arrive at the house! In closing, I would like to extend the Board’s thanks to Ron and Gail Beveridge for volunteering to co-Chair the 2002 Ontario Junior Curling Championship which Unionville C.C. will be hosting. Expect a call from Ron and Gail about serving on the various committees. Continued Good Curling! AL GATES,

We had 17 teams represent Unionville C.C. in the annual "Men’s Brick" Bonspiel. We had two winning teams: Bill Creber, Jim Sharples, Harry Sear and Jim Coverdale won the Main Event in the Masters. Silvio Roy, Cap Cowan, Bill Lee and Ian Monroe won the 2nd Event in the Seniors. In the Men’s Draw Section, the following teams were the winners. -Mike Donahoe, Bruce Band, John Ferneley, Larry Ketch -Eric Milne, Glen Jewitt, Bill Pentecost, Phil Policelli -Don Garland, Ken Lott, Ernie MacDonald, Peter Gates Please be advised that the points for playoff qualification will be on the men’s board. This will give all curlers an idea of the positioning of each curler for the playoffs. The Men’s Curling Committee wishes to acknowledge the problems that have occurred with full participation. We apologize, but we have just so many spots to fill in all positions. There are those curlers who may have played in only one of three draws, and we are trying to be fair and have each curler guaranteed at least 1 game in "Men’s" per week. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience but we are |
trying our best with a difficult situation. The Unionville Invitational will take place the weekend of February 4-6. The annual "Dixon Garland ‘Men’s’ Bonspiel is February 14-18. Sign-up sheets are upstairs on the board. Again, the Men’s Committee wishes each curler the best of luck and sportsmanship during the hunt for the play-offs in April. MIKE PURCELL
OCA NEWS We’ve had a fair amount of interest in OCA events this year and to date, the following skips have taken their teams into zone 6 playdowns in 5 different categories. SENIORS - Glenn Nelson and Duncan McDougall
Congratulations to Steve Matthews and his team of Ken Lott, Neil Smith and Ray McMahon. They won the Holiday Inn Challenge Zone Honours and advanced to the |
Provincials where they won the 2nd Event. WELL DONE GUYS! As for the others, it’s a "wait till next year" lament. Nice effort to all who participated. Still time to sign up for the Intermediates, Bantam Boys, Silver Tankard, Mixed and Senior mixed. Why Not give these a try? It’s a great experience and lots of fun. Good Curling! BILL CREBER

thanks to the hard work of the Committee of Linda Payzant, Pat McDougall,

It was a privilege to host the Scott Regional Playdowns in December, as well. A big "thank you" to Kathy Cassin and her volunteers for such a fine job. Congratulations to the winner of the "A" and "B" sides - one of which was our own Kim Gellard with her team of Sherry Scheirich, Sally Karam and Allison Ross. JANUARY CLINIC On January 6 Linda Corcoran and Anne Dann ran a fabulous clinic for the interested Day Lady Curlers. It was very well attended. The ladies had a great time with a variety of drills and even a Board Game which, I understand, became quite competitive. The 3 hours passed by very quickly and each person left with many new things to think about. Thank you, Linda and Anne, for such a knowledgeable clinic. LADIES ONE DAY BONSPIEL The Ladies One Day Open Bonspiel was held on January 7. Nancy Brown, our Chairperson this year, and her committee of ten did an outstanding job of running this Spiel. It is always a popular event as the prizes for the winners of each draw are Royal Doulton Figurines. The Trophy Winner this year was the team from Port Perry of Jan Towns, Louise Hougen, Sandra Leach and Trudy Smith. The Runner-up was a |

DIAMOND SENIORS Two teams represented UCC in the Zones at Oshawa Golf & Curling Club. They were Lois Roberts, Blanche Leslie, Carole Murray and Joyce Sherman; the other, Joyce Miles, Marilyn Parsons, Lennie Reynolds and Sue Gordon. Lois Robert's team won the "A" side of the Zones and just recently went to Lakefield for the Regions. They put forth a great effort and we are very proud of them as well. ALL-STAR SPIELS |
Be sure to watch the bulletin board and sign up if you wish to participate in these Mini spiels. They are a lot of fun! COOK BOOK
I hope everyone is enjoying their curling season and the new friendships you have made. Please continue to support the remaining events we have planned for you. PAT MAYBURY
BUSINESS LADIES SECTION Our 2nd schedule is almost over. Several ladies are willing to curl on more than one evening to fill our next schedule. Thanks to Marion McMahon and her Ice Committee to keep things running smoothly. Our wonderful Christmas dinner was prepared by Pat on December 6. Prizes were presented to the 1st schedule winners. Barb Pentecost, Angela Singleton and team created festive candle centrepieces. |
The Pasta Spiel, an in-Club event, was held on January 15. Christine
Couperthwaite and committee decorated, arranged lunch and two games. Each
curler received a spaghetti spoon to complete the Italian theme.
Snack nights continue to be a huge success. Our 1st schedule included a Pizza Night and our 2nd schedule had a Wing Night. After a busy day at work and a game, this is an enjoyable, relaxing time. There will be no regular curling during the weeks of March 6 and 13. During this time the Day Ladies will join us for some games and refreshment. Second schedule prizes will be presented on Dessert Night. SUE PETHICK
MIXED SECTION The Mixed season is well under way with the first schedule completed and the |

second schedule nearly finished. Remember, the winning team from each draw will participate in a playdown at the end of the year and the top four teams will play on Championship Day. The Mixed Bonspiels have been well attended and everyone has had a great time. The Nuts and Bolts was won by the team of Brian MacMillan with Neil Smith, John Bayko and Sum Tang, with Bruce Band sparing in a couple of games. The trivial Pursuit Bonspiel has just finished, with some of us finding
the trivia part more difficult than the curling. The winning teams were:
The Team Entry Bonspiel "Life is an Irish Pub" is on February 11 and 12. This Spiel is sponsored by Dixon-Garland Funeral Home. The last "Closing Mixed" Bonspiel will be held March 21 to 25, so remember to look for the sign-up. The Mixed Committee is always looking for help, whether it is assisting the committee, on the committee or heading the committee. If you are interested in one of these positions, please inform |
a current committee member. They are: Peggy & Graham Adams, Paula & Mike Donahoe, Sue & Neil King, Fran & Ray Mount, Barb & Bill Pentecost, Gail Coleman, Judy Robertson, Laurie MacAllister or me, Connie McDermott. Good Curling in 2000! CONNIE MCDERMOTT
BANTAM/JUNIOR SECTION On Saturday, December 4th, a lapsed UCC tradition was revived with the 1999 Bantam/Junior In-house Bonspiel. With our competitive team players engaged in competitions elsewhere, others had the opportunity to move up in positions and provide close competition throughout the day’s 3-game schedule. Very special thanks to Pat Seawright who not only organized the event but also provided supplementary sponsorship including a new Seawright trophy to record the annual winners of this event. The names for this year will be Caleigh O’Neill (skip), Kyle Hallowell (vice) & Tristan Bergauer-Free (lead). On Monday, Dec. 13th , some 16 Bantam/Juniors benefited from a midseason "Back-to-Basics" clinic, ably organized by Mary Gellard and her crew (Joan Allen, Gail & |
Cory Beveridge, & Marilyn Lowe) as kindly arranged by Lois Dickson. Many thanks, ladies, from all the curlers involved. The loss of Sunday ice in December also prompted extra Monday afternoon sessions for badge testing: our thanks to Don Garland for his able assistance on those occasions. The Bantam/Juniors completed the first schedule on January 15th - congratulations to the winning team: Tim Penwell (skip), Sarah Noorden (vice), Shaylyn Fitzpatrick (second), Michael Sandiford & KelliAnne Nelles (leads). The second draw began January 30th --- despite the obvious effects of school examination pressures, the results of that day's games promise keen competition during the remainder of the season. Our "January Madness" provided an inter-schedule interlude. A "bring/borrow-an-adult" event held on January 22, this "battle-of-the-clans" prompted keen rivalry both on the ice and in the off-ice "Celebrities-in-the-News" trivial pursuit. The results: the Stewarts won the battle-on-ice in decisive fashion, while the Andersons garnered sweet revenge by an equally decisive win in the Trivial Pursuit. Thanks to the parents, grandparents, and friends |

Congratulations to Kim Gellard and team for reaching the Ladies Provincials and to Andrea Kerr, Fran Allan, Janet Stover and Dawn Webb for being Senior Ladies Provincial Runners-up.
