UNIONVILLE CURLING CLUB NEWS

VOLUME 16, NUMBER 3

March 2000

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

First the good news. Kent Tomasik's operation went extremely well and was a complete success. He should be rejoining us shortly. Hurray back Kent, we all miss you very much, especially me!

Can't believe it's March already! The ladies kick it off with a two day spiel and it ends with the week long Mixed Skins event, but the season is far from over. March is also a great month to clean out our closets, basements and cupboards, finding treasures you don't or haven't used. We are looking for your treasures, gifts and donations for our annual fund raising auction. Make sure you don't miss out on this "bargains galore" fun event. Mark Saturday April 1 on your calendar and look for the donation sign-up sheets around the Club. I'm letting you know in advance so you can put a little extra money aside now!

Your participation in this event assists the Club in maintaining our reserve fund.

Why is this important? Well you may have noticed that there is a new "spot light" on Ice One. Our reserve funds allow us to invest in improvements in our Club, such as the proposed new lighting system to replace our antiquated on-ice electrical system. The Board of Directors will keep you informed of our decision on the lighting as we move forward.

Our season finale, as always, is the playofffs commencing in April, concluding with Championship Day on Saturday, April 15. It always provides good competition, excellent curling fun and camaraderie; not to mention the opportunity to send off the 1999-2000 curling season with good food, beverages, and great friends.

While writing this message to our curlers at Unionville, I can't help thinking of an outstanding curler who was an all around Canadian class act. Sandra Schmirler's passing leaves all of us in the curling world saddened at the loss of a great Canadian and a world champion. She will be greatly missed.

Good Curling!

AL GATES
PRESIDENT

MEN'S SECTION

Well, we are nearing the home stretch of the curling season, and each team and men's curling member are positioning themselves for the play-offs in April. Please check the men's board in the locker room for all information on the play-offs.

The annual Dixon-Garland Men's Bonspiel was another smash success. It takes a lot of work and time from the Committee. I wish to thank Jim Bell, John Ferneley, Mike Purcell and all others who helped put on this great show. But this event could never be as successful without the Sponsors. Don Garland has graciously sponsored this event for many years, and without his contribution these events would never happen. Please thank him and all other members who get involved in Club events when you see them.

place on Tuesday April 11. We look forward to an excellent lunch after watching the finals of the third schedule that morning.

I would like to say a HUGE "THANK YOU" to the most wonderful Executive around. You have made my job a pleasure this year!

We owe a special thank you to Marilyn Parsons, the TRADITION Editor and Wendy Sear, our typist for continuing to print the TRADITION this year. We all look forward to catching up on other sections' news throughout the year. This is a very time-consuming project and we all appreciate your efforts. Thank you ladies!

Have a happy and safe summer and see you in October.

LADIES CHAIRPERSON

BUSINESS WOMEN'S SECTION

Another year of curling is coming to a close. The Business Women have had another successful year. Our social events have all been a great success, thanks to Barb Pentacost, Angela Singleton and their Committees. We are looking forward to our Wind-up Dinner and Annual Meeting on April 17th. We had a very successful Guest Day

on February 19 with several new enthusiastic guests. Christine Couperthwaite and her Bonspiel Committee did a terrific job of decorating and making sure the day was an enjoyable one for all who attended.

Marion McMahon and her Ice Committee held two clinics in February on strategy. These were appreciated by all attendees. We especially appreciate all the time and efforts of Lois Dickson . Thanks, Marion and committee for all your hard work with scheduling, ratings, and making up the teams.

There was no regular curling for two weeks in March but we had a great time curling with the Day Ladies on March 8 and 9. A good chance to get to know each other better, lots of laughs and fellowship.

A special thank you to Cathy Meanchoff and her committee for all the wonderful prizes at the end of each draw.

See you all at the Closing Dinner on April 17.

THANKS FOR THE TERRIFIC YEAR EVERYONE!

MIXED SECTION

It's hard to believe but we're almost at the end of the

curling season. As usual, everything has worked out very well; the committee can pat itself on the back for a job well done!

Since last report the only Mixed Bonspiel we have had was the Team Entry "Life is an Irish Pub" sponsored by Dixon and Garland. The two day was very successful culminating in a final night dinner and songfest with a real live Irish Band called BLACK VELVET. The lounge was jumping, if you weren't there, you missed a great party. The prizes were the pick of the table and they too, were amazing. The overall winners were Rick Chilton, Lynn Brown, Tom Kalvik and Sandy Swailes.

Our next event is the week- long Skins bonspiel. This is open to everyone in the Club and is quite different from the regular format. If you haven't played this format you are in for some very interesting games. The idea is, if you have the last rock, you MUST score at least 2 or you lose the hammer and don't get a skin. It you steal one then you get the skin.
If you have the hammer and only take one, you lose the hammer and the skin is carried over to the next end. Needless to say, the entire game is played in the four foot. Our sponsors for this event are Robb Thompson (Black and Decker) and Norm Hobb, C.A. Thanks to our

sponsors the prizes for this bonspiel are the most amazing we have ever had.

1st and 2nd schedules are finished and by the time you read this the 3rd should be almost done as well. I think everyone has had a good year and have enjoyed the schedule curling. Thanks to Mike and Paula Donahoe for organizing these events.

The winners from each draw will start their playdowns Sunday, April 9, with one team (drawn at random) getting the bye in the first round. The top four teams will play on Championship Day, April 15. Even if you're not in the final four, please come out April 15 for a great end of the season party.

At this point, I would like to thank everyone who has served on the Mixed Committee this past year. They are Mike and Paula Donahoe who have run the schedule and just about everything else. Judy Robertson who has organized just about everything we've eaten all year. Gayle Coleman and Laurie MacAllister who have also helped with the food. Peggy and Graham Adams who ran the Pot Luck Spiel. Sue and Neil King who have done a lot of the phoning and Sue, who is always in the kitchen helping. Barb and Bill Pentecost who ran the Trivial

Pursuit Spiel and Bill who plays in a "mean" Irish band.
Fran and Ray Mount who ran the Nuts and Bolts Spiel and who are good enough to take this whole thing on next year. You have all done an outstanding job and we thank you very much.

Good news, we have convenors for the Mixed Section for next season. They are Ray and Fran Mount. However, we are still looking for more bodies to be on the Committee. It is a great way to meet many of your fellow curlers and at the same time have some fun.

Good curling or maybe I should say Good Golfing.

CONNIE MCDERMOTT
MIXED SECTION CHAIRPERSON

BANTAM/JUNIOR SECTION

On Sunday, March 5 the Bantam/Juniors took a break from the regular schedule for a 2 game in-club "mini-spiel" based on a modified version of the skins formula. With the competitive teams busy elsewhere, others had the opportunity to learn from this challenging new experience. Many thanks to Adrea Kerr, Marilyn Lowe and Al Gates (with assistance from Lois Dickson) for acting as on-ice strategy consultants.

Bantam/Junior curlers continue working hard on the Curl Ontario skills programme. Recently completing the Red Badge level were Andrew Lowe & Michael Sandiford, while Kevin Ham, Jackie Masongsong, Brandon Warne, Cassandra Warne & Lindsey Warne qualified at the Blue Level. Congratulations also to Kyle Brown for successfully achieving the exacting Bronze Badge. Many others are honing their skills for completion of their individual programmes before the end of the curling season.

Our competitive curlers have done extremely well in recent out-of-club competitions. Ryan & James Hardman were skip & second respectively on the Markville Secondary School's team which won the Zone 6 A-Side Schoolboy championships, while three UCC B/Js formed the core of the Gore Schoolgirls Crystal Bowl Champions - Lindsay Osborne (skip), Heather Nicol (vice) and Jackie Reynolds(lead). Finally, Our Bantam competitive team - Holly Nicol (skip), Kim Brown (vice), Sarah Noorden (second) & Jackie Masongsong (lead) won the Bantam B-Side Zone playdowns.
CONGRATULATIONS!

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
The Canadian curling community has been saddened by the passing

of Sandra Schmirler, a great curler and ambassador of our sport. Even non-curlers across the Country were aware of our champion. She will be missed.

We all wish Kent a speedy recovery - enjoy the summer and get your strength back, some more weight on your backside and we'll see you on the ice in the fall.

See you all at Championship Day and the Silent Auction.

Have a great summer - keep safe and we will all renew our friendships again next fall.

P.S. It takes 12 weeks to get in shape for curling so that means July 1st is your target date!!
