PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
We’re now halfway through the season and
all appears to be going well. In
December the Club hosted the Junior Ladies and Men’s Regional playdowns and
was treated to some excellent curling.
The Unionville Junior Ladies team of Kelly Cochrane, Melissa Wagner,
Heather Nicol and Tammy Sale won Provincials where they played well, but were
up against a very tough field.
Congratulations on this achievement!. I’d also like to thank Neil and Nancy
Smith and their talented committee for putting together the New Year’s Eve
Party. A great time was had by all. Thanks also go to Stan Hodge for his
generosity of the donation of a piano to the Club. Many thanks Stan! We
are also saddened with the recent passing of long time member Jack Quinn and
Honorary member Kit |
Lemasurier. They will be missed. Remember the Auction to be held on
Saturday, February 24, which is earlier than previous years. Details are posted on the bulletin
board. It has become one of our
year’s great highlights and a great party!
We encourage all of you to participate. All the best in the last half of the
season and GOOD CURLING! DENNIS

Laura Ferguson and her committee
entertained us with a little skit and a few Christmas Carols, accompanied by
Joyce Miles at the piano, to get us in the spirit of the season. Donations for the Yellow Brick House were
collected and Laura Ferguson delivered them.
Thanks to everyone who donated to this worthy cause. JANUARY

a great success again this year with over 132 curlers participating during
the weeklong event. Thanks go out to
all those ready and willing spares which meant that all but 2 games were
played with 4 person teams.. A
special thanks to Diane and John French for putting together a fantastic
prize table. The champions were as follows: A Event – Bob Lucas, Ron Morgan,
Jane Morgan, Peter Wong B Event - Dennis Akerley, Helen Mitchell, Stephen
Wells, Dennis Prunkl |
C Event – Dennis Osborne, John
Heath, Kim Parker, Sum Tang D Event – Jim Bell/Jim Kinzinger,
Dorothy Boynton, Louise Ferri, Diane French This year, in lieu of the Trivial Pursuit
Bonspiel, the Mixed Committee held a Clinic Spiel on January 20, 2001. There were 36 participants, the majority
of whom were leads; however, there were participants of all levels and there
was something for everyone to brush up on (no pun intended). The spiel consisted of instruction
sessions during the morning hours, a short break for lunch, and then 2 four
end games in the afternoon where participants got to put into practice what
they had learned in the morning. It
was a fun day and participants left feeling a sense of accomplishment. A special thanks to all of the instructors
who donated their time and also to Connie McDermott for the concept. The last “Closing Mixed” Bonspiel will be
held March 19 to 24, so remember to look for the sign-up sheets in the Club. As
always, the Mixed Committee is looking for fresh faces with new ideas for the
2001-2002 curling season. If you are |
interested in joining the Committee, or
even lending a helping hand during a bonspiel, please let one of this year’s
committee members know. MIKE

CURLING COMMITTEE INTERMEDIATE
AND JUNIOR SECTION The first schedule of curling saw keen
competition at both levels. Winners
were determined only on the last
Sunday’s curling, with the following results. Intermediate Winners: Skip Andrew Lowe, Vice Kyle Couperthwaite, Second Mathieu Bisselle, Lead Adam Tonan. And at the Junior level with augmented
teams, Skip Stephen Jones, Vice Sarah
Noorden, Second Michael Sandiford,
Leads Lisa Barrett and Peter
Jones. The second schedule brought
new team alignments, but these winning combinations will be reconstituted for
the Club Championship playdowns at the end of the season. On December 9 the two
Divisions came together for the 2nd annual Seawright
Bonspiel. From the 8 |

competing teams, the rink of Brandon
Warne, Stephanie Izaryk, Scott McNaughton and Tim Jones earned the
inscription of their names on the Seawright Trophy as champions. The keen competition was illustrated by
the single point differential separating the 2nd place rink of
Hollie Nicol, Kim Brown and David Noorden.
Many thanks again to the generous sponsorship of Pat
Seawright who presented the trophy and congratulated all participants for
their performances. Highlighting the progress by our teenage
curlers in the various levels of the OCA badge programme was the recent presentation to Andy Penwell of the
highest Gold badge, a daunting challenge for any curler. Emblematic of the hard work being done, we
expect Andy will have little time to bask alone in the glory before being
joined by others now polishing their skills for the final push to a similar
level of achievement. Congratulations
and encouragement to all who continue to follow this excellent ladder to
more enjoyment of curling through
improvement of individual knowledge and skill. Our
competitive teams continue to carry the UCC |
name with distinction into several
competitions. Most notable recent
achievements include Bantam Girls rink of Hollie Nicol, Kim Brown, Sarah
Noorden and Jackie Masongsong who captured TCA & District Championship on
December 29/30 in a keen competition including international
representation.. Congratulations and
good luck to our Bantam teams looking forward to the Zone playdowns in early
February. PETE

AND JUNIOR DIVISION LITTLE
ROCK SECTION The Little Rock Curlers have been very
busy over the past few months. We
have had many weeks of “tag” curling, which have allowed us to get to know
our fellow curlers. We want to thank
all the adult Unionville Curling Club members who came out to help us on the
ice over this time. Your help was very
much appreciated! On
Sunday, December 10, 2000 teams representing countries from around the world
participated in the Little Olympic Bonspiel.
Teams “from” Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy, Jamaica, and Sweden
took to the ice for three exciting games, with Olympic Curling |
trivia taking place in- between games. At
the end of the day, Jamaica (Robbie Rubbini, Kelly Hobson, and Jesse Bolduc)
donned the bronze medals,Germany (Shawn Bolduc, Melanie Rubbini and Erin
Murphy) went home with the silver medals, and Spain (Hailey Smith, Warren
Dodd, Heidi Prunkl, and Marc Morgan was crowned with the gold medals. Congratulations to all teams who
participated and many thanks to all the parents who made the day a great
success!! KELLY
