PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
Well, its hard to believe, but March is upon us and the season is
fast coming to a close. As always , our season finale is Championship Day,
which is on the afternoon and evening of Saturday April 7. Even if you are
not on the ice, make sure you come out and enjoy the excellent curling, food,
drink and general good fun. On February 24, the annual auction was held, which is our major fund
raiser supporting the capital improvement programs around the club. The
evening was a great success and many thanks go out to Linda McKendry for her
tireless efforts in organizing the event. Many thanks also go out to the many
members around the club who donated to this worthy cause, as well as to those
who came out to enjoy the fun of the evening and got into the spirit by
reaching for their cheque book. |
Special congratulations go out to two members from our club who
reached the Nationals this year, each finishing 3rd in their
respective competitions, Sheri Cordina in the Ladies Championship and Lindsay
Osborne in Junior Women. Congratulations to both for this excellent
accomplishment. On a final note, please ensure you mark your calendar for June 11th
for the Club’s Annual General Meeting. Good luck to all as you make your run towards Championship Day. DENNIS OSBORNE PRESIDENT

I
hope everyone is enjoying this season. Please call me with your feedback, it
is always welcome. LORNE FRANKLIN LADIES
SECTION Here we are close to the end of another curling
season. I’ve enjoyed myself as Chairperson for the Day Ladies’ Section. I
have had many great games and enjoyed watching just as many from behind the
glass as well as on the television. I would like to remind everyone that
behind all our curling fun is a lot of great sponsors who make it possible
for us to enjoy the sport at the level that we do. We should all be mindful
of the sponsors and try to support them whenever we can. I know that in-house
bonspiels and schedule curling sponsors are mentioned often but we should
also be aware that |
the sponsors for the Scott Tournament of
Hearts, Scott Paper Products, puts thousands of dollars towards Women’s
curling of which we all benefit at some level. Please try to support Scott
Paper so they will continue to support us. Our second schedule has been completed and the winners of the Supreme
Lighting Trophy are Blanche Leslie, Pat McDougall, Marilyn Jannett, Joyce
Morgan. Runners-up: Connie McDermott, Barb Otani, Karen Blackman, Lynn
Brewer. Winners of the Unionville Arms Trophy are: Ann Agnew, Mary
Anne McLeod, Donna Craig, Wendy Ternowesky.

a huge success thanks to Pat McDougall, Bonnie Cochrane and their committee.

Nuttall Runners-up: Nancy Davis, Anne Dann, Betti-Ann Lavitt, Irene Kubica. Consolation winners: Stephanie Andrew, Naomi Rutherford, Aileen Damp,

The Bea Kulmala Bonspiel was held on February 22nd
with the committee of Maureen Dudley, Pat Graham, Sue Davies and Connie Van
Parys doing a fabulous job. The Bee Theme is wonderful and I hope everyone
enjoyed the format of team entry except the leads, which were drawn. The trophy winners: Mary Gellard, Terri
Savoury, Joanne Schoch, Edith Baldik. Runners-up: Pay Maybury, Kathy Cassin,
Ingrid Hollett, Joyce Morgan The one game high winners are Laura Ferguson, Mary Anne McLeod, Chris
Wightman, Donna Svistunenko. This year the Bea Kulmala Bonspiel was also a qualifier for the
Swiffer Pro-Am Challenge. The winners, Mary Gellard’s team, had their names
entered into a draw to play at the Cricket Club in April. The Swiffer Pro-Am
Challenge will have ten amateur and three celebrity teams playing. The third schedule is well under way with
the teams playing for the Connie Taylor Trophy or the M & M
Meats Trophy. The finals will be played on Tuesday April 3rd at 9:30 and
the prize and trophy presentations will be held the same day at the closing
luncheon. |
Our Town + Country BMW two day bonspiel
started off with a snow storm, but with only minor delays, continued on to be
a very successful affair. Lorene Reid and Judy Young along with their large
committee of helpful hands did a wonderful job of decorating in the spring
theme. The meals for both days were prepared by Pat Sweeting and were
delicious. The raffle table is always a great success but this year the Queen
dropped by to aid in the distribution of prizes and kept us all entertained.
Thank you Mary Grant for your Royal appearance. Always a delight, Dave
Parsons played the piano for our enjoyment during the evening. Thank you
Dave! Thanks to Sue Davies, Maureen Dudley, Shelley Nielsen, Joanne Schoch and their helpers for opening their
homes to us and providing, not only a lovely lunch, but also a warm
atmosphere to enjoy the food and the company. Thanks to Wine-Not for donating
the wine that everyone enjoyed. The prize table consisted of a unique
collection of pottery from the Earth & Fire Pottery in Haliburton which
were purchased by Ingrid Hollett. The trophy winners: Dorothy Robertson, Jackie
Horner, Sil Mannik and Jan Bennett from Bayview. The runners- |
up: Debbie
Rushton, Kathy Arbuthnot, Pat Burgess and Anabelle Wood from Richmond Hill.
Bonnie Cochrane presented the trophy and pins to the winners. Thanks to Jim
Cochrane, President of Town + Country

bonspiel. Day and Night Ladies Bonspiel March 7 & 8 THE WINNERS Wednesday 1st

on the executive or at the door. Many thanks to Marilyn Parsons, the Tradition editor and Wendy Sear,
typist, for all your hard work bringing us the newsletter. I’d also like to thank the Ladies Executive for their efforts in
making our section run smoothly and making my job an enjoyment. While I’m at it, thanks to the Board for all the behind the scenes
work you do, Jim for the great ice we’ve enjoyed this year and Kent for the
great job you do-doing everything! I hope you enjoy the rest of this season, the summer (which is sure
to come sometime) and hope you will all return next year. MARY KULMALA LADIES’ CHAIRPERSON BUSINESS WOMEN The first schedule of the Business Women’s season came to an end in
early December with a fabulous Christmas dinner organized by Angela Singleton

Temoin Downs, Deanne Bates, Risa Powell As the third schedule draws to a close we
must once again thank Marion McMahon and Robyn Scott for organizing 24 very
competitive teams over three evenings throughout the season. The ever popular
snack nights organized by the Social Committee continue to be a great
success. Two
clinics held in early January highlighting sweeping, delivery and strategy
were well attended by new and seasoned curlers alike. Thanks go our |
to instructors Marion McMahon, Deb Nicol and Mary Gellard. Guest Day held on January 13 was a huge success thanks to Nancy Smith
and her committee. Sixty-five members and guests participated in a well
organized day of clinics, curling and lunch. Pauline Wozniak and her guests
took top honours for the day and were rewarded with fabulous prizes thanks to
Ann Millard. The Business Women’s Section hosted the first annual Curl for
Heart Bonspiel on Saturday February 17. Sixteen teams were entered in the
event with first place going to a team skipped by Edith Anderson from Bayview
Curling Club. Besides raising over
$600 for the Heart Association, participants were educated about the risks of
heart disease for women. The bonspiel committee chaired by Nancy Smith ran
yet another fabulous spiel! JANE MORGAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S CHAIRPERSON SPECIAL OLYMPICS CURLING Monday evenings from 5–6 pm has become the |

highlight of the week for eight very
special athletes. Practices have taken the form of one on one clinics,
stressing walking on the ice, sweeping, delivering rocks, weight control and
hitting a target. To teach strategy, we have begun playing 2 to 4 end games
with mixed volunteer/Special Olympian teams. The hot chocolate and cookies at
the end of the practices provide a wonderful time for comraderie for all
involved. In mid February,
the team traveled to Midland to participate in a bonspiel with 14 local
Special Olympians. Parents and friends cheered on our athletes as they
represented Unionville in fine style. Lunch for the volunteers, athletes and
their families was served by a local Rotary Group. The progress that has been made is truly
amazing thanks to the enthusiasm and guidance of our spirited volunteers
Laura Ferguson, Harry Sear, Carolyn Nicholson, Shanna Brander, Lois Dickson,
Marion McMahon, Mardy Emmerson and Kim Griffen JANE MORGAN
MIXED SECTION The Mixed Committee has been busy organizing and |
running two
major events since the New Year. On January 20, a
clinic spiel was held and was attended by club members who felt they would
like to pick up some pointers in an effort to improve their game. There was a
full house and everyone felt the clinic was a success and that their time was
well spent. A team entry spiel, Life’s an Irish Pub,
was held on February 9 and 10. The spiel was a success culminating in a real
Irish Pub atmosphere complete with an Irish Band providing song and dancing
to complete the evening. RAY MOUNT MIXED SECTION CHAIRMAN BANTAM & JUNIOR
SECTION On February 25th, these two levels
joined together as 28 competitors in eight teams competed in a mini-bonspiel
based on accumulated points over two games. The winning team of Hollie Nicol, Sarah Noorden & Tim Jones was followed closely by runners-up Tim Penwell, Michael Sandiford & Matthew Lowe. Sponsorship came from Spalding through the personal
generosity of Mrs.
Wendy Izaryk. |
Regular schedule
curling saw keen competition in completing our 2nd schedule. At
the Bantam level, only on the last day of competition did the team of Caleigh O’Neill,
Matthew Lowe, Harrison Griffiths & Amanda Jones emerge as winners.
Triumphing at the Junior level was the team of Andy Penwell, Spencer
Griffiths Sarah Noorden, Jackie Masongsong, Danielle Hubbert & Jordan
Ramsden. Competition in the 3rd
schedule has begun, although, the March Break will interrupt this briefly. Congratulations also to our competitive
teams. The Bantam Boys – skip Stephen Jones, vice Brandon Warne, second
Jamie Hellyer & lead Jordan Ramsden did well in 3 closely
contested games at the Zone level.
The Bantam Girls – skip Hollie Nicol, vice Kim Brown, second
Sarah Noorden & lead Jackie Masongsong won the B side of
the Zones and are off to the Regionals on March 10th – 11th.

annual competition for the Murray & Lois Roberts Trophy event
which ends up our curling year early in April. PETER MITCHELL BANTAM & JUNIOR. CHAIRPERSON LITTLE ROCK SECTION As the curling season comes to an end, the Little Rock curlers will
be participating in a two game playoff competition, an invite-a-friend day
and a mini “short game” bonspiel. On March 3rd, the Little Rock curlers played in the annual
Teddy Bear Bonspiel sponsored once again by Murray and Lois Roberts. Their contributions to this bonspiel are appreciated by the curlers.
Six teams participated in 3 six end games. Congratulations to all who took
part. Special congratulations to the team of Kyle Couperthwaite, Megan Cornwell, Cody Prunkl and Erin Osaka, winners
of the bonspiel. The Runners-Up was the team of Rosaleen Murphy, Warren
Dodd and Jesse Bolduc. |
At this point I would like to extend my
gratitude to Judy Robertson, Rob Murphy, Greg Elliot, Lorne Franklin,
Robyn Scott and Dennis Prunkl for their help throughout the season. They
assisted me on the ice each week by cheering on the curlers and working to
help improve the skills of the youngest curlers in our club. Enjoy the off
season and see you back on the ice in October. KELLY TOOLEY LITTLE ROCK CHAIRPERSON JUNIOR PROVINCIAL PLAYDOWNS 2002 We are very pleased to say that we have a wonderful

still supporting Scott Paper by purchasing their products. Are we? They have been a terrific sponsor and to
keep them we have to support them. When spring arrives and then summer,
please enjoy—drive car & club safely and see you all next fall. MARILYN PARSONS EDITOR
