UNIONVILLE CURLING CLUB NEWS

VOLUME 18, NUMBER 1

November 2001

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Another great curling season at UCC is underway! A special welcome is extended to the 52 new members who have chosen to join our club. We have a wonderful little club that offers the best in competition, fun and camaraderie.

We all appreciate the efficiencies that UCC has to offer and our thanks to the efforts of manager Kent and ice man Jim that our curling experience is so positive. Drop by, say hello and let them know how we value their work.

Your Board of Directors continues to work on your behalf  to ensure that the club has the best amenities that our operating budget will allow. Decisions made at the Board level are always with the best interests of our members in mind. Your Board of Directors for 2001-2002 include Carroll Chilton, Bill Climie, Andrea Kerr, Duncan McDougall, Linda

McKendry, Jane Morgan, Dennis Osborne and Harry Sear. With the resignation of Mike Donahoe, we welcome Steve McLeod to the Board.

To enhance our view of what’s happening on the ice, cameras have been installed over both houses on each sheet. Monitors in the lounge now allow us to know exactly who has shot rock and where it lies in relation to the other rocks in the house. Members are already making good use of the monitors and their value will be really appreciated during major events when a crowd gathers at the glass.

We are very excited to be hosting the Junior Provincial Championships from January 2 to 6, 2002. The planning committee is ably chaired by Ron and Gail Beveridge. Many of our members have taken on leadership roles and are actively preparing for the event. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. Better still, sign up to be a volunteer and be a part of a most successful

championship. We remain optimistic that UCC will have a team of its own to cheer on during that week!

As we move into the holidays, I wish you the best of the season and good curling always.

MIXED CURLING

The Mixed Committee would like to welcome all mixed curlers to the 2001/2002 curling season. This year’s committee, co-chaired by Bill and Barbara Pentecost are: Norm and Cheryl Craven, Bette and Ivan Amery, Brian MacMillan,  Al Johnston and Marilyn Parsons, Bets and Ray Lobban and Mike McCormick. Please feel free to approach any of  the committee members with your thoughts, ideas or

concerns regarding mixed curling.

The first draw is well underway with a full slate of 160 participants. We hope that everyone enjoyed the first draw and we look forward to many exciting games over the remainder of the curling season. Brian MacMillan has ably taken over the task of drawmaster from Kent Tomasik. Please bring questions or concerns regarding the draws to Brian or any of the other mixed committee members.

The mixed “Pot Luck” bonspiel held on October 20 was well attended with more than 60 curlers participating. Each team played two games and counted points for win/loss, ends won and rocks scored. The team of Kelly Tooley, Tom Kalvik, Wendy DaSilva and Paulette Atkins won first crack at the buffet table, where one again, the prized offering was smoked salmon. The quality and variety of food was exceptional this year, considering the vast amount of meatballs available last year. Thanks to Bets and Ray Lobban for organizing a well-run and enjoyable event.

The next mixed event is the “Nuts and Bolts Bonspiel” organized by Norm Craven and Mike McCormick. Look

for bonspiel results in the next issue of the Tradition.

Upcoming events include the Clinic Spiel on January 19 and “Life’s and Irish Pub Bonspiel” on February 8-9. Please come out and support the Mixed Bonspiels. They are always fun. Look for sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in lounge in the New Year.

JUNIOR SECTION

We are off to an enthusiastic start with more than forty curlers, in two divisions. Our Juniors – the 15 – 18 year old’s have 24 members currently with games and skill practice underway Sundays from 11 – 1:30.  The 12 – 15 year old section, our Intermediates, currently has 20 active curlers starting their days with Curl Canada skills clinic followed by their games. Both groups have added some new members this year.

The Curl Canada skill series is a big hit with the “kids” with more than 28 participants working on the five skill levels.

At a competitive level we are represented by three teams. The first two are competing at the provincial junior level. The first team is

skipped by Hollie Nicol with Kim Brown, Sarah Noorden and Jackie Masongsong rounding out the team. Recently, this team won the zone competition. Good luck at the Regions. The second consists of Heather Nicol, Tammy Sale along with two out of club curlers. We are optimistic that we may see one of these teams at the Provincial Junior playdowns to be hosted at U.C.C. in the first week of January.

At the interclub mixed level, we have one team representing U.C.C. comprised of Andrew Lowe at skip with Caleigh O’Neill, Matthew Lowe and Patricia Malvar rounding out the group.

All of the curlers seem to be enjoying the first draw with a spiel to come in December prior to opening our second draw in the new year.

CHAIRMAN

LITTLE ROCK SECTION

Welcome back to all curlers!! The Little Rock curlers are looking forward to a great 2001-2002 season. Little Rock Curling got underway with 3 clinics to teach our new members and remind our “veterans” how to curl. Special thanks to Lorne Franklin, Christine Pierce and Robyn Scott who

offered their time to come out and help us on the ice!! We thank them for their patience and hard work.

We are now beginning to play our first games of 3 or 4 ends. The 25 kids are really enjoying themselves on and off the ice. Cookies and a nice cold drink after the game allow teams to sit down, get to know one another and discuss the game. Thanks to all parents who have volunteered to help with snacks!

We are fortunate this year to have many parents that curl and are able to help on the ice, however, we are always looking for any extra pairs of hands to assist us on the ice. If you are interested in helping for an hour on Sundays beginning at 3pm, please come out or speak to myself.

We are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Little Rock Olympic Bonspiel and our Family Curl Day in December.

Good Curling and see you on the ice!!

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Mary Kulmala was the lucky person to win a year’s

membership. This draw was a popular fundraiser for hosting the Junior Provincial Championship January 2-6.

Plans are progressing nicely for a successful event. Volunteer for a job if you can spare the time. So far, everyone is very supportive and helpful with this venture.

Come out and watch the Opening Ceremonies January 2 at 7 PM, followed by the Junior Men’s first draw. The curling at this level will amaze you.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

p.s.  The Men’s Energizer city wide spiel is fast approaching and it is better than ever. Look for a team and the sign up sheet. You won’t regret it.
