PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The curling season is now well underway and it is abundantly clear that everyone is having a good time. Thanks are extended to our section chairs and their committees for ensuring that the season is running so smoothly. Your efforts are acknowledged and very much appreciated. Many of our members came to the club on New Year’s Eve to enjoy
an “ I Love New York” theme. The event was a great success with good food,
good music and good company. A special thanks is extended to Laurie Noorden
and her committee for organizing such a wonderful party. A highlight of the season at UCC has to be our hosting of
the Provincial Junior Championships. From January 2 to 6 eight junior women’s
and eight junior men’s teams participated in a first rate curling
competition. Co-chairs Ron and Gail Beveridge are to |
be commended for the strong leadership they
provided to their hard-working and dedicated committee. The entire event was
characterized by excellence. Throughout the week there were congratulatory
comments from the competitors, coaches and supporters regarding the
outstanding quality of the committee’s work. Some said it was the best
provincial championship they had ever attended. Recognition must be given to
all members of the host committee as well as an expression of our thanks.
Thanks are also extended to all of the volunteers who ensured the success of
this event. Co-chairs:
Ron and Gail
Beveridge; Secretary: Connie
McDermott; Treasurer: Bob
Davies; Ceremonies: Marilyn and Dave Parsons; Facilities: Glenn and Fran Allan;
Food: Sandra Davies and Laura
Ferguson; Media/Communications: Del
Hicke; Reception: Linda
McKendry; Banquets: |
Bonnie Cochrane and Pat Maybury; Timers: Gord Barry, Pat Seawright and Bill Creber; Ice: Andrea Kerr and Jim Kinzinger; Clothing: Maureen Dudley and Sue Davies; Board Liaison: Duncan McDougall; Club Manager: Kent Tomasik. There was strong competition throughout the week from
teams that reflected all that is right with the youth of today. They were a
true delight. Congratulations are extended to Julie Reddick’s team from the
Oakville Curling Club and Jeff Armstrong’s team from the Blue Water Curling
Club. They will be great provincial representatives in the Canadian championships in P.E.I. Once again, thank you and congratulations Ron and
Gail. You have made us all proud! And, as the curling season continues, may you all
experience you own kind of |

success as you strive to meet your
personal goals. MARILYN LOWE PRESIDENT CLINICS A SUCCESS Once again this year, UCC demonstrated its
commitment to curler development with four successful clinics that were held
as the curling season got underway. Each clinic was planned, organized and
delivered by our own members. We are fortunate at UCC to have so many
certified instructors who have the skills, interest and commitment to provide
this valuable support to new and
seasoned curlers alike. Sixty-six members attended one of two novice clinics under
the leadership of Gail Beveridge and Marilyn Lowe. The instructors working
with Gail on Wednesday and Thursday evenings included Andrea Kerr, Joan
Allen, Dave Busato, Paul Couperthwaite, Lorne Franklin, Mary Gellard, Blanche
Leslie, Connie McDermott and Kelly Tooley. The Saturday instructors included
Fran Allan, Stephanie Andrew, Mary Ann Artkin, Lynn Brown, Laura Ferguson,
Jane Morgan, Heather Nicol and Judy O’Brien. Off-ice instruction was offered
by Art Leganchuk, a former member of UCC. Great |
improvement was noted in the skill levels
of the participants on completion of the six hour clinics. It is so very
important that our beginning curlers are taught the proper mechanics, theory
and etiquette of the game and these clinics served to do just that. Forty-two members participated in the
intermediate clinic which provided a review of the mechanics of sweeping and
delivery and challenged the participants to hone their individual
skills. Looks of satisfaction were
evident as the curlers identified and corrected some of their bad
habits. Marilyn Parsons, who ably
chaired this clinic, had a strong cohort of Level 2 instructors to work with.
They included, Deb Nicol, Ann Dann, Lois Dickson, Laura Ferguson, Al Gates,
Blanche Leslie and John Nicol. A very big “thank you” is extended to all of our
instructors who were involved in this year’s clinics. We have more
comfortable and confident curlers as a result of their efforts. Thanks are
also extended to Laura Ferguson, Lynn Brown and Barbara Pentecost who
organized all of the wonderful snacks and meals. These clinics were a great team effort. |

of all levels looking to learn more about all aspects of the sport.
Instruction sessions were held during the morning session, then a short break
for lunch, and the day ended with some real games to allow the curlers to put
their new found skills into practice under the watchful eyes of the instructors.
From all accounts, the day was rewarding for all that participated. The Closing Mixed Skins Spiel will be held March 18-23.
The sign up sheets will |
be posted in the club in mid February.
Sign up early to avoid disappointment. Once again, the Mixed Committee is looking
for enthusiastic, creative people to join the committee for next season. If
you are interested but need more details, talk to one of this year’s members
to learn more. MIKE McCORMICK MIXED COMMITTEE JUNIOR
SECTION Our junior group
continues with much enthusiasm. Our older group continues to arrive weekly,
settle into their games and enjoy the competition. They are quite taken by
the introduction of the “mystery end” where there are prizes weekly to the
team who has taken that end. As we have a number of our of club competitive
curlers who are not with us each week, our in house curlers adjust to
differing teams weekly. They seem to enjoy this approach. Our younger
curlers have finished their first draw playing in organized teams. Winning
the first draw was the foursome comprised of Matthew Lowe, Harrison
Griffiths, Andrew Irwin and Robbie Rubbini. We have hosted one bonspiel with

sponsorship of
Pat Seawright, combining both groups for the day. All the curlers enjoyed the
competition and comraderie. Winning this spiel
was Spencer Griffith at Skip with Harrison Griffith and Andrew Irwin rounding
out the team. A second spiel is planned for late February. Our skills
instruction continues with a good number of our curlers taking part weekly in
the development program developed by Curl Ontario. Congratulations
go out to the Bantam Girls team skipped by Hollie Nicol with Kim Brown at
vice, Sarah Noorden at second and Jackie Masongsong at lead who are advancing
to the Ontario Provincials. Our inter club
team comprised of Andrew Lowe at skip, Caleigh O’Neil at vice, Matthew Lowe
at second and Patricia Malvar at lead is off to a good start in their eight
team league. KEVIN LOWE CHAIRMAN LITTLE ROCK SECTION December was an exciting month for the Little Rockers!! On
December 9th, much to the surprise of our members, I’m certain, we
hosted the Unionville Curling club Little Rock Curling Olympics, |
sponsored by Royal Bank. Our curlers played on teams from various
countries around the world and enjoyed the hospitality of the host country,
Canada. Teams from Denmark, Norway, Italy and France participated in the
event and were pleased to see the flags from the 1989 World Juniors hosted by
Unionville Curling Club put back into use for a day. After curling three
games and participating in other “Olympic” events, such as the Draw to the
House and the Short Game, prizes were awarded to all participants. Congratulations to the following medal
winners: The Gold Medal went to Kelly Hobson and her team from Denmark of
Erin Osaka, Yianni Eracles, and Dylan Kramarczyk. The Silver Medal winners from Norway were Pedro Malvar, Melanie
Rubbini, Alexander Elliott, Randy Cheung and Allyson Cowie. Our Bronze medal winners were Samantha
Elliott, Ben Kinsella, Erica Cheung and Samantha Jans from Italy. Also participating in the event was the
team from France of Robin Franklin, Jesse Bolduc, Bronwyn Craven and Megan
Cowie. Special thanks to the Royal Bank, Steeles and Silver Star Branch, and
Tracey Breton for their donations to the bonspiel. |
Looking out on to the four sheets, of ice
late in December you may have wondered what was happening…as we had teams
made up of Little Rockers, Business Women, Men’s league curlers, Mixed Curlers
and even a curler from the Afternoon Men’s curling!! Well, you would have
walked in on our Family Curling Day.
Curlers brought their families and teams were made up of curlers and
their families. It was a fun way to teach our parents, who are non-curlers,
the ropes and for our curling parents to enjoy time with us on the ice. All had a great time and we look forward
to another one sometime in March. We are now looking forward to our Round
Robin, as well as another daylong in-club spiel in March A special thank you and congratulations to
all the Little Rockers who participated in making the Opening Ceremonies of
the Ontario Juniors an amazing event!! KELLY TOOLEY CHAIRPERSON PROVINCIAL JUNIOR CURLING
