PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As the curling season draws to a close, there are many
successes to reflect upon from the 2001-2002 season. Congratulations are
extended to those folks who have won given schedules in their respective
sections and who look forward to one final hurrah on Championship Day. We
have experienced some wonderful successes beyond club play and, at this
writing, still have teams competing. Congratulations to the women’s bantam
team skipped by Hollie Nicol which won the Ontario Bantam Championship.
Congratulations to Mary Gellard’s team, runner-up at the Ontario Senior
Ladies Championship. Congratulations to Blanche Leslie’s team which competed
at the Ontario Master Ladies Championship. Congratulations to Fran Allan’s
team which won the Ontario Master Ladies Championship and which now moves on
to the |
National competition where we wish them
the very best of luck. And congratulations to Kyle Brown’s mixed bantam team
which recently won the “B” side of the zones and proceeds to the regions at
the end of March. To all of these teams, we are proud of your accomplishments
and of the good reputation for competition that you bring to Unionville
Curling Club. Three major club events are yet to come and member
participation is encouraged for all. Mark your calendars for Saturday April 6
and plan to attend the annual auction, our major fundraiser in support of
capital improvements around the club. Thanks are extended to Carroll Chilton,
Andrea Kerr and Linda McKendry for their organization of this important
event. One week later, on Saturday April 13, we will hold Championship Day on
which section champions will be determined.
The format for this year will include three draws, with the first
early in |
the afternoon and the final draw in the
early evening. Whether you are a competitor or not, you are invited to attend
this day filled with good fun both on and off the ice! And finally, I
encourage you to attend the club’s Annual General Meeting on Monday June 10th.
This is an opportunity for your sentiments to be expressed and for your voice
to be heard. There remain only a few months now in my
tenure as President of UCC and I would like to take this opportunity to thank
the membership for the support I have received throughout this year. We are
fortunate at Unionville Curling Club to have so many members who are willing
to contribute their time so that we can all benefit from well-run sections,
bonspiels, and special events. Thank you for all that you do for UCC! . MARILYN LOWE PRESIDENT |

success with the great curling,
delicious food and the wonderful tunes provided by the Black Velvet Band

wish you all good luck in |
the playoffs and hope you have a safe and

JUNIOR SECTION Our groups
continue their play in each division and while the numbers in attendance are
not large, they are all dedicated, consistent in their attendance and
continue to enjoy their games and each others company. Future plans include a
parent day which we will see the parents, both veteran and novice curlers,
out with their children in what promises to be an enjoyable day for all. A
mini spiel to come and the division playoffs will round out our season. We have had a number of
competitive teams playing this year with good success. The highlight has to
be the bantam girls’ team skipped by Hollie Nicol, together with Kim Brown at
vice, Sarah Noorden at second and Jackie Masongsong at lead and coached by
John Nicol, who had an outstanding season winning their zone, regional and
finally provincial championships. Recently, the team played in the Ontario
Winter Games |
finishing with a
Silver Medal. Well done girls! A bantam mixed
team skipped by Kyle Brown with Sarah Noorden at vice, Andrew Lowe at second
and Jackie Masongsong at lead recently won their zone and is looking forward
to the Regional playdowns to be held on March 23 and 24 in Oshawa. Best
wishes all! Finally, a team
skipped by Andrew Lowe with Caleigh O’Neill at vice, Matthew Lowe at second
and Patricia Malvar at lead recently competed in the Greater Toronto area
bantam playoffs capping a winning season. All in all this
has been a busy season for our competitive curlers. Who knows, there may be
some future Tournament of Hearts or Briar winners out there! As the season
comes to a close, I would like to thank the curlers for being such
outstanding young people, their parents for their support and the club for
its continued support of this valuable program. KEVIN LOWE CHAIRMAN P.S. Kelsey’s Restaurant at Woodbine and #7 has agreed
to sponsor the Hollie Nicol bantam team next year. If you want to support the
team, plan to eat at Kelsey’s and please write |

restaurant copy of the bill “Unionville Girls Curling Team”. They will
appreciate your support. LITTLE ROCK SECTION As the curling season comes to an end, the
Little Rock curlers are looking forward to their Playoff Championships in
April after their round robin play comes to a completion at the end of March. On March 2nd, the Annual Teddy
Bear Bonspiel was held with 16 curlers participating – a much lower number
than was expected. Next year, we hope to improve these numbers by encouraging
more of our curlers to make plans to attend and possibly inviting teams from
another club. Special thanks to our long time sponsors of this event, Murray
and Lois Roberts. At the end of the day, it was the Pooh Bear team that was
declared the champions. The team made up of Rosaleen Murphy, Kelly Hobson,
Alexander Elliott and Bronwyn Craven won their final game with a tie breaking
draw to the button to claim the Championship title. Congratulations to all
curlers for a great performance and thanks to all who helped on and off the
ice during the event. As the
season comes to an end, I would like to take this |
opportunity to thank all of the parents
who helped to make this season a successful one. And to the curlers, thanks
for such a fun season…I hop you will return again next season either as a
Bantam or a Little Rock curler to continue on in reaching your goals to one
day be Olympian curlers like the players who proudly represented Canada in
Salt Lake City!! KELLY TOOLEY CHAIRPERSON FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Why not have dinner at Kelsey’s and
support our own Bantam Girls Hollie Nicol team and then go and see “Men with
Brooms”? You might catch a glimpse of yourself. It certainly was nice to watch our own Sheri Cordina at the Scott Tournament of
Hearts playing so well for the Sherry
Middaugh team. Good luck Fran Allan, Janet Stover, Kathy Cassin and Lynne
Wasylyk at the Canadian Masters in Medicine Hat. |
Get well wishes for a speedy recovery to
Anne Azlen and John DeBruijn. They both broke their ankles the same week at
the club. Another Curling season is almost history.
Good golfing and everyone have a happy and safe summer. We will see you all
back in the fall. Thank you Kent for your help with the
Tradition. MARILYN
